THE CHURCH

FIRST TIME HERE?
(Don’t worry, the roof won’t fall in!!)

We hope you feel really welcome at Koornang Uniting Church.

We are just regular people (really!), a mix of ages and backgrounds. Some of us have been here for years and some of us are fairly new too.  Some of us grew up in churchy families and some of us didn’t. Some of us know a bit about God, Jesus and the Bible and some of us don’t. Some of us probably don’t know why we keep coming – the music?  The food?  The company?  The chance to hear a bit more about God’s love for us?

Whatever it is we reckon Church is a community of people who are trying to love God more and who try to look after each other in a way that pleases God.  So don’t freak out if someone smiles at you and says “Hi!” – they just want you to feel welcome, that’s all.

Worship time – is for all ages.
We meet in the church for about an hour to listen, sing, hear from the Bible, pray for our world, and think about how we can make a difference. We meet at 10am on Sunday mornings with a mixture of preachers who lead worship and sometimes other members of the church might lead a prayer, a reading or a reflection.  Sometimes we use video clips and drama or puppets.
We also meet at 5:30pm on the 1st and 3rd Sunday’s of the month where Ps Kelly usually leads us in worship and we fire-up ‘Sir Hamlet’ and enjoy worship and company over a hot beverage (from 5pm). We then usually head for dinner somewhere together; lifts are always available.

The band leads the music at both services – in the morning it’s a mix of older style songs for the older style people (!) and newer music for the newer style people. Sometimes a bit of jazz and blues even creeps in there.  In the evening the style of music is usually songs that have been released in the last few years. Any week you might hear a combo of keyboard, trumpet, sax, violin, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, drums and organ. We think the music’s pretty good. (Still waiting on that recording contract!)  Feel free to sing along or just listen.

We’re Family friendly!
Nobody minds a bit of noise and wriggling from little ones so don’t worry.  You’ll find a kids’ activity table on the left as you go in so feel free to sit over that side where they can move around a bit.  There’s room for prams and pushers too.  If you need to take bubs out for some cry time try the foyer where you can still hear what’s going on. Oh, and there’s a baby change table in the disabled toilet in the foyer if you need it!  Our Families Pastor, Tai, is happy to introduce you to other families here and answer any questions.

During the service our Children’s Pastor, Hannah, does a short talk with the pre-school/primary kids and then during the sermon time they are invited to go out together with Hannah for about 15 – 20 minutes for activities in the Kids’ Room. The Kids’ Room is right next to the main worship area so you’ll be close by.  You’re welcome to go with them to make sure they settle in and if they prefer to sit with you in the church that’s fine too.

Got teens? Our Youth Pastor, Kelly, can tell you more about what’s on offer during the week.  Kelly is the Young Adults Pastor too and also coordinates a couple of groups for young adults.  These aren’t the only groups that happen during the week – in fact we have lots of groups at Koornang! Check out the other groups on the website for more details!!

Food!
After the morning service it’s time for morning tea in the foyer.  You can stay to eat, drink and chat or you can race off – whatever suits you. Once a month we have a shared lunch. If you happen to turn up on shared lunch day, don’t panic – there’s always a spare sandwich and a Tim Tam floating around.

We hope you enjoy your time here and experience the peace and love of God in your lives!  We are here for you if you need us.
